Maine Conservation Corps

As part of the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry, the mission of the Maine Conservation Corps is to accomplish conservation initiatives that inspire people and enhance communities.

• About Us
  The Maine Conservation Corps (MCC) is devoted to conservation and environmental stewardship across the state, with positions available throughout the year.
  
  The MCC consists of two programs, Environmental Stewards and Field Teams.
  
  Environmental Stewards serve individually to meet the needs of federal, state and non-profit agencies throughout Maine. These positions offer a opportunity to gain skills in the conservation field while increasing the capacity of local organizations. The role of an Environmental Steward is as varied as the needs of host sites. Past projects include: habitat restoration, invasive species monitoring, environmental education, engagement and advancement of community volunteer groups, small scale recreational trail projects and water quality monitoring. Environmental Steward positions begin in January and June, concluding in November.
  
  The primary focus of MCC Field Teams is to construct and rehabilitate recreational trails in places like Baxter State Park, on the Appalachian Trail, as well as land owned by local communities and land trusts. Projects include remote backcountry hiking trails, local nature and walking paths, multi-use trails, as well as accessible pathways. Some of the trail structures the MCC builds are stone staircases, timber bridges, boardwalks, bog bridging, and drainage structures, with a focus on the traditional trail skills that the MCC is famous for. The field season runs from mid-June through mid-October. Leadership training opportunities begin in February and April.

  Since 1993 the MCC has supported the goals of AmeriCorps with our members Getting Things Done, Strengthening Communities, Encouraging Responsibility, and Expanding Opportunities by accomplishing the following:
  •Constructing and maintaining sustainable trails on state, federal and public lands.
  •Working on community conservation and environmental service projects.
  •Building relationships and serving with community partners.
  •Developing the values of citizenship, civic engagement, and personal responsibility.
  •Studying natural and environmental sciences and ecological and conservation issues.
  •Teaching environmental and conservation education in schools and in the community.
  •Recruiting and managing thousands of volunteers to support projects that improve and impact trails, watersheds, air quality, and service opportunities for Maine's youth.
  •Enhancing personal development through job skills training, team building, service learning and modeling an ethic of service to the community.
