Environmental Stewards serve 1700 or 900 hour AmeriCorps terms, beginning in January and June. Their term of service begins with one to two weeks of training with the Maine Conservation Corps before being paired with a Host Site. Environmental Stewards are tasked with expanding the capacity of local organization by accomplishing conservation initiatives. The activities of stewards vary by the needs of host sites; past projects have included: water quality monitoring, volunteer management, habitat restoration, environmental education, small scale recreational trail projects, and much more.

Increase awareness of environmental issues, connecting youth and strengthening communities.

Position Outcomes

Ecosystems will be improved through monitoring waterways, providing public education, constructing sustainable trails, tracking and eradicating invasive species, and other similar projects. Volunteers will benefit from increased community involvement and learning technical environmental skills, and will influence Maine's lands and waters in a positive manner. AmeriCorps members will increase their knowledge of soft skills (e.g. conflict resolution, team work, and communication), technical skills (e.g. rigging, stone work, chainsaw use, carpentry, laboratory techniques), and job readiness skills (e.g. interview techniques, resume writing, and job search techniques) after the completion of their terms.

1700 hour Environmental Stewards will receive a total living allowance of $15,500 (before taxes), distributed over 43 weeks. 1700 hour members are eligible of health coverage. 900 hour Environmental Stewards receive a total living allowance of $8,050 (before taxes), distributed over 23 weeks. Both placements receive wide range of training and networking opportunities, access to pro-deals, and a Maine State Park Pass. A small number of Host Sites also offer housing as part of their position.
