Tutors serve full-time for an entire academic year and are embedded into a specific classroom. Our literacy tutors are the literacy resource in the classroom, working alongside a lead teacher and an assistant teacher. At their school site, tutors implement specific early literacy interventions, conduct weekly progress monitoring, and work with a team of coaches to make data-informed decisions to ensure each child is on track to read proficiently.
Service Activities
At a minimum, a tutor must:
- Serve in a full-time capacity, approx. 8 hours/ day, M-F
- Commit to a full service term (generally August-June, though applications are accepted on a rolling basis)
- Administer specific data-based and scripted curriculum
- Monitor student progress to make data informed decisions
- Receive year-round training, coaching, and support
- Implement feedback from coaches and program staff
- Participate in service days, ongoing training, and other Literacy Lab events and meetings
Community Need Addressed
The Literacy Lab's mission is to provide children from historically underserved and marginalized communities with individualized reading instruction to improve their literacy skills, leading to greater success in school and increased opportunities in life.
We seek to close the resource gap for our schools and communities so they can close the achievement gap for children. Many high-need schools are faced with the challenge of both an achievement gap and a resource gap. Our approach to this challenge is to provide schools with evidence-based literacy intervention and assessment tools, rigorously trained full-time tutors to implement the model, and a coaching and support structure that ensures the success of the program and students.
Position Outcomes
The Literacy Lab recognizes that ensuring all students have the chance to read proficiently is an urgent and critical need. Our approach is to provide Pre-K classrooms and elementary schools - children from age three through grade three - with evidence-based literacy intervention and full-time literacy tutors to implement the model. With the help of assessment tools, their coaching teams, and The Literacy Lab’s program staff, our tutors help their students become successful readers.
