The Martha O’Bryan Center youth development program for elementary and middle school students is designed to support the whole child –academically, socially, and emotionally. In addition to this support, students develop their interests and passions through the arts, recreation, and experiential learning opportunities in Nashville and beyond.
Duties and responsibilities include: support the Site Coordinator in curriculum development, preparation for guided reading lessons and planning for after school activities such as tutoring, homework help enrichment and service learning projects; review and reflect on anecdotal observations of students’ key experiences and design academic interventions to address individual student needs; assist Site Coordinator in entering pertinent data in tracking system; receive professional development; attend staff and partner meetings; conduct academic assessments 2-3 times per year, prepare parent activities designed to help them be more active and engaged in the after school program; assist K-8 Youth Development with on-going projects.
Throughout the year, AmeriCorps Members will learn the inner workings of running a successful academic intervention program and be presented with the opportunity to take ownership and leadership in various roles according to their interests. Specific opportunities for leadership have included technology assistance, media & marketing, community outreach and social-emotional curriculum design. K-8 Youth Development is proud to present each AmeriCorps Member with the opportunity to enhance programming with the unique interests, skills and experiences that he/she brings to the department. In addition, AmeriCorps members who demonstrate strong growth in the first half of their year of service may in the second half of the year be called to serve as Site Lead for their site, providing situational leadership as the point person for the site when the Site Coordinator is not available, with the support and guidance of the Site Coordinator, K-8 regular staff, and the AmeriCorps Director.
Service Activities
• Assist K-8 Leadership Team in curriculum creation, organization, and implementation.
• Coordinate with Site Coordinator on student recruitment and engagement strategies.
• Builds relationships with a small cohort of students.
• Provides hands-on academic assistance to students daily.
• Provides complementary homework help and foundational support daily.
• Helps each student achieve success by encouraging students to reach individual goals.
• Provides enrichment activities for students based on member’s individual gifts and talents.
• Plan and execute quarterly parent meetings.
• Sustain effective partnerships with community organizations.
• Assist Site Coordinators in preparation for upcoming week’s programming.
• Create enrichment lesson plans for activities.
• Utilize programming information to check attendance and communicate with parents.
• Inventory and organize program materials.
• Assist with childcare during parent events.
• Employ databases to assist programming and grant reporting (NAZA, LEAPS, SWORPS, ETO)
• Collect and utilize data to inform programming.
