Description

The New Hartford Library Youth Services AmeriCorps 4-H Project Coordinator will work with volunteers, community partners, and professionals to enhance and expand positive youth development programming and outreach opportunities to youth in the New Hartford community and library service area. The member will strive to deliver recurring, nonformal programming that lead toward multiple youth life skill outcomes, including Productive Citizens, Outstanding Communicators, Effective Leaders, and Successful Learners. The member will also be responsible for recruiting and training volunteers to enhance programming opportunities and lead to sustainable programming for the host organization.

Additional activities will include:
• Lead Pre-teen Advisory Board for 5th to 8th graders. Provide a safe space and support for youth to share, be creative, and bring their ideas to fruition.
• Research the possibility of offering a Wednesday early-out after-school program. Propose plans for what it would offer children. Interview school officials and other libraries who offer this program to learn what paperwork is necessary and what guidelines and curriculum are used. In discussion with library staff and board, seek out and collaborate with the school and other local organizations to develop and execute a plan to realize this program in our community, using volunteers.
• Lead weekly Kids Book Club for preschoolers and homeschoolers 12:30-2:00 Thursday during school year, 1:00-3:00 with programming of guest presenters in the summer. Plan reading material, snack, and related activity such as craft, song, game or tech tie-in, for each meeting.
• Conduct outreach activities and recruit youth to engage in library programs, including collaboration with schools in New Hartford and Dike and with other community organizations (such as FFA, Women’s Club, Lion’s Club, etc.) to complete projects, promote programs, and recruit participants.
• Explore programs of interest to teens that could fulfill needs in our community such as book clubs or study groups, including any that adults and teens could enjoy together (special book club, crafts classes, teen tech help for seniors, etc.)
• Help maintain and add to the children, youth, and young adult collections including print, digital media, and objects for the “Library of Things” through book drives and in relation to the projects on which the member works. For example, if there is a crochet class for teens in the works, add to our books about crocheting. If Kids Book Club is using the puppets but books to go with them are lacking, add those books. If PTAB decides to sponsor a frisbee golf competition, add frisbees to the Library of Things.
• Propose and present original ideas according to the member’s interests and expertise. This could take the form of introducing an established library program or service or coming up with something entirely original.
• Participate in orientation and in-house training provided. Attend outside training as available and needed or desired. Visit other libraries to observe how their youth programs succeed.
• Debrief, plan, and collaborate with the library director daily. Plan and collaborate with other library staff, board, and volunteers when pertinent
