Community Need Addressed

1 in 7 adults in Palm Beach County lack basic literacy skills and struggle with daily living tasks such as completing a job application, helping their children with school work, reading a bus schedule and communicating with their health care provider.

39 percent of fourth grade students in our community read below grade level, putting them at risk of falling behind in all subjects and not achieving their high school graduation.

Up to 2,000 seniors in area high schools dropped out. Most of these students have multiple life challenges including homelessness and lack of a caring, consistent adult in their lives.

Schools, libraries and nonprofit organizations have connected with the Literacy Coalition for a partnership with the AmeriCorps program in order to help address these needs. Each year Literacy AmeriCorps members impact up to 4,000 individuals of all ages by providing life changing tutoring, mentoring and graduation coaching. AmeriCorps members fill a gap by providing full time caring and service minded members who can increase the number of individuals served and offer intensive one-to-one support for learners that our partner sites are not equipped to provide on their own.
